One thing Floridians cannot be without is Air Conditioning. As we head into the really hot Summer months, you want to make sure that your system is working properly.
Below are some of the questions we recommend that you ask when deciding if it’s time for a new AC system.
How Old is Your System?
As expected, the life expectancy for an AC in Florida is lower than the national average at 10-12 years. Systems are used almost year round and exposed to high humidity levels, saltwater, and sulfur, which take their toll over time. Other factors such as maintenance and quality of the original installation will play a role, but if your system is over 10 years old, replacement should be a serious consideration.
Does it Make Sense to Continue to Repair Your System?
If your system needs only a minor repair, then it likely doesn’t make sense to replace your system. However, if your AC is over 10 years old and the repair is close to 50% of its value, then a replacement makes more sense. You should also consider how often your system needs work. If you find yourself calling for emergency service every few months it might make sense to invest in a new system over a current, unreliable one.
How Efficient is Your Current System?
Do you know your AC’s SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating? The higher the rating the more efficient it is and the less energy it consumes. It might make sense to upgrade your system to one with a higher SEER rating since the amount you will save in cooling costs will offset the price of the new system. It’s good for both your wallet and the environment.
Other factors to consider are how long you plan to live in your home, if there are any rebates or other monetary incentives to purchase, or if you would benefit from new technology. Many customers find that a new AC can pay for itself over time thanks to a combination of rebates, warranties, and energy savings.
